India’s half-hour zone dates back to colonial rule of India and the era when ever-faster steamships and trains were shrinking the world. The start of the 20th century saw some push from scientific associations to calibrate India’s time to GMT. That recommendation was rejected by the colonial government, which opted for a unified time that sat squarely in the middle: five and a half hours ahead of GMT. In 2015, North Korea moved out of sync with South Korea by creating “Pyongyang Time,” putting the country eight and a half hours ahead of GMT instead of nine. India’s colonial-era time zone decision making, however, reflected a chorus of political, scientific and commercial voices both from within the government and outside of it, Gordon says.

Merrins died Wednesday in Los Angeles at age 91 after a long illness, according to UCLA, where he coached for 14 years. He played 82 times on the PGA Tour, but never more than 10 tournaments in a year. CNN —Government officials, public health professionals and concerned parents are calling on Congress to ban water beads, a children’s toy that they say poses significant health risks. Water beads are tiny balls made out of extremely absorbent polymer material. Pall also emphasized that water beads have been responsible for 4,500 emergency room visits nationwide since 2017, and that these incidents have grown more frequent. Most recently, the Commission and company Buffalo Games recalled about 52,000 Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kits in September. Hoehn-Saric said that, beyond the Commission’s recalls, the CPSC is investigating taking further action regarding potentially harmful chemicals in water beads.

Rite Aid filed plans to close 154 stores on Monday as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Rite Aid is the smallest of the three major drugstore chains, well behind CVS and Walgreens. Rite Aid was expected to close stores as part of its bankruptcy. Rite Aid told Insider that it considers a variety of factors when deciding to close a store, "including business strategy, lease and rent considerations, local business conditions and viability, and store performance." NEW YORK (AP) — The HBCU Transformation Project, a coalition of 40 historically Black colleges and universities, on Wednesday announced a $124 million gift from philanthropic funders Blue Meridian Partners to increase enrollment, graduation rates and employment rates for the schools' graduates. “This very significantly scaled grant from them signals to the philanthropic community that this is a really good investment to make,” he said of the Blue Meridian gift. The donation will expand the work of the project, which has already received $75 million from Blue Meridian Partners since 2020. Blue Meridian Partners also provided funds to those organizations to improve their capacity to support the schools. HBCUs have received significantly less support from philanthropic foundations than predominantly white schools.
